At SEX-ED + , Halloween rhymes with the end of the financial year 🦇🕷🕸 and this year it’s really, really scary 😱😨
Deficit across the board! Almost exactly half as many sales as last year. But still just as much expenditures.
If you know anything about the project and its human, you’ll understand that this deficit isn’t due to too much spa/massage/caviar/champagne (although…today I’m thinking about it!).
How do we explain this?
💵I don’t have an answer for sales. I’m as invisible as ever on social media (shadow-ban yeah!👻) so no change there. But I’ve attended lots of conferences with the project, so I’ve had good visibility both in Europe and North America (Brussels, Geneva, Toronto, Saint Louis, Atlantic City, Saint Hyacinthe etc.). If you’d like to advance some possible explanations, please do!
💵As for expenses, it’s business as usual. Equipment, travel, cheap accommodation on colleagues’ sofas and cheese sandwiches… the usual luxurious life. On the other hand, a lot of money and time has been invested in developing the gynaecological model… I hope this project will eventually take off to pay back the sweat, tears and blood I’ve put into it (in addition to approximately $40,000).
What’s next?
A $25,000 deficit is huge. Since the last two years had been positive, I had some money set aside and I was able to absorb it. But this is not going to last forever.
Personally, my position remains the same: no debt. If the project doesn’t pay for itself, the solution is simple: I pull the plug and find myself another job while continuing to work on it in my spare time. Of course, things will go more slowly. But this human being, like others, needs a roof over her head, food in the fridge and cash to pay for her healthcare.
In short, the future is hazy and uncertain. There are a few projects around the world that are being hailed for their innovation, their scientific relevance and the impact they are having on medical/educational practices. But these projects rest solely on the frail shoulders of individuals, without subsidies or institutional support.
The models I have developed are used by the most prestigious universities in the world. But it’s possible that the next conference I attend, I will be back to my waitressing roots and serve you dinner.
Either way, it’s been a great ride!
