You may have noticed that I have been going around quite a bit this year. But why is important for SEX-ED + to invest time and resources in conferences? (reminder: those don’t come cheap- AT ALL!)
First there is the need to reach the audience for which the project is intended. As SEX-ED + is shadow-banned (blocked from view even if the page is still there) on all social media, there is no other way to be seen than to get out of the basement and go and meet people. On the plus side, folks attending those conferences are pretty cool.
Then, there is the need to know where people, researchers and practitioners are at. What is the new science? What are the sex trends amongst populations I am not a part of ? What are the new ways of promoting pleasure in an inclusive way?
And most of all : what are the needs of folks attending those events? SEX-ED +’ goal is to create material to support the practice of sexuality professionals. And there is no better way to know about their needs than to come and talk with them.
Some projects are too complex to undertake for a structure as small as SEX-ED + but some are just perfect. At the Society for Sex Therapy and Research conference in Toronto I met Jaclyn Lanthier who is the human behind the Lichen Sclerosis Support Network. We talked about the need to represent the vulvae of people affected by the condition and to create realistic models for medical or psycho social interventions with those patients. Fingers crossed, it should happen in the next few months!
