Poster – Gender affirming procedures

SEX-ED + moulds genitalia to create tools for sexuality education and sexual health professionals. These anatomical models are used to train professionals and to support discussions about anatomy, hygiene, stimulation, pleasure, safer-sex practices, body image and much more.

Poster: Gender Affirming Procedures

Plaster casts of the external genitalia of eight trans or non-binary (whose gender doesn’t align with gender assigned at birth), endosex (who don’t have known intersex traits) folks who elected to have gender affirming procedures (hormonal supplementation and/or surgery).  All models shaved completely before moulding.

Poster affirmation genre 3

Phalloplasty, Model 1, before and after implant

External genitalia (penis) of a trans (whose gender doesn’t align with gender assigned at birth), endosex (who doesn’t have known intersex traits), 32-year-old man. Model had gender affirming surgery (phalloplasty) six years prior to moulding and is taking hormonal supplementation (testosterone).

Name given to genitalia

“Phallo, penis.”

Relationship with genitalia

“Mitigated. I am still exploring this semi-functional anatomy. I was definitely unlucky and had a lot of surgery complications following the phalloplasty. After 8 general and 1 local anaesthesia surgeries, it is still not finished.”

The first moulding happened in 2019 while he did not have an erectile pump due to surgical complications.

“I have sexual limitations. I still can’t pee while standing. But for the brief moment when I had a penile pump, when I activated it for the first time and I had MY penis, hard and erect in my hands, I felt that I was totally whole. That was a moment of pure bliss, worth all the sacrifices.

The second moulding took place in 2022 after rods and an erectile device were installed.

“At the moment the relationship I have with my genitals is ambiguous. It’s the second time we are trying the implants and my sexuality has been really affected. Before the implant I had a satisfying relationship with my body and I could feel some sensations and hardening from the buried clitoris when aroused. It was easier to stimulate myself and I felt validated to feel I had some kind of hard-on even if my phallus wasn’t hard. But since the implant, I can’t feel my clitoris and it’s really difficult to stimulate myself and reach orgasm. I was surprised to not experience gender euphoria, the feeling of being whole like the first time I had an erectile device. The implant functions, everything is ok on the mechanical side of things and the surgery went well.”

Dicklit model 2

External genitalia (vulva) of a trans/non-binary (whose gender doesn’t align with gender assigned at birth), endosex (who doesn’t have known intersex traits), nulliparous (who hasn’t given birth) 23-year- old person. Model had been on testosterone supplementation for 1 year prior to moulding.

Name given to genitalia

“Vulva or pussy when in a very intimate context.”

Relationship with genitalia

“It’s really good, I feel very at ease with my body.”

Comment received 18 months after moulding:

“My body has kept changing. The dicklit is a bit wider and longer. We moulded it in a non-aroused state but if we were to mould it now in an aroused state we would see the enlarged glans and the ways the external part gets hard.”

Poster affirmation genre 5

Vaginoplasty 2

External genitalia (vulva) of an agender (whose gender doesn’t align with gender assigned at birth), endosex (who doesn’t have known intersex traits), 26-year-old person. Model had gender affirming surgery (vaginoplasty) fifteen months before moulding and had also been on hormonal supplementation (estradiol).

Name given to genitalia

“Vulva, vagina, big rod (bump above neo-clitoris).”

Relationship with genitalia

“It’s not always easy when it comes to sensations, but these are nothing compared to the negative feelings I experienced when I had typical XY body parts. My vulva gives me the little push that I needed to enjoy life fully and to be at ease with my sexuality. SEX-ED + is doing a super important job for the community. It gives visibility to the diversity of genital configurations and also creates –SUPER- realistic tools for concrete sexuality education. Thank you so much!”

Poster affirmation genre 6

Metoidioplasty, model 2

Name given to genitalia

“Penis, scrotum (remaining labia), entrance or “front hole” for the vaginal cavity.

Relationship with genitalia

“I am super happy with my penis. I would have loved to have a larger scrotum but I opted to preserve labia tissue and let it hang under the penis. I didn’t go for a vaginectomy as penetration is part of my intimate practices. ”
